This Privacy Policy explains what information K-Free collects, why, who we share it with, and what control you have over it. K-Free is operated by Stone Ventures LLC (“K-Free,” “we,” “our,” or “us”).
The short version. K-Free is about kratom recovery, which means some of what you tell us is sensitive. We take that seriously, and we would rather be specific with you than reassuring.
Your journal never leaves your phone. It is stored locally on your device and is never sent to us.
Most other things are stored on our servers and tied to your account, including your email address, your onboarding answers, your progress, and anything you post in the community. That information is not anonymous.
We do not sell your information, and we do not run ads. We share it only with the service providers we need to run the app, and only for that purpose.
Journal entries are stored locally on your phone. They are not transmitted to us, we cannot read them, and we do not back them up. If you delete the app, reset your phone, or lose your device, they are gone, and we cannot recover them. If you want a copy, export it from within the app.
This is a deliberate design decision. The most private thing you write in K-Free should not sit on someone else’s server, including ours. The tradeoff is that you are responsible for your own backups.
We are not going to be coy about this. The information you give us during onboarding describes your relationship with a substance, and in some cases your mental health. That is sensitive, it is stored on our servers, and it is associated with your account and therefore with your email address. It is not anonymous, and any claim to the contrary would be false.
What we do about that:
K-Free includes an AI coach. When you write to it, your message is sent to OpenAI, which processes it and returns a response. Some context about you (for example, where you are in your recovery) may be included so the response is relevant.
Things to understand before you use it:
We also use AI tools internally to build and maintain K-Free, including in software development and in drafting and illustrating content. That work does not involve your personal information.
We use the following service providers. Each receives only what it needs to perform its function, and none of them are permitted to use your information for their own purposes.
| Provider | What it does | What it receives |
|---|---|---|
| Google Firebase | Account sign-in, database, cloud functions, push notifications | Your account details, onboarding answers, progress, and community posts. This is where the data described above is stored. |
| OpenAI | Powers the AI coach and other AI features | What you write to the AI coach, plus relevant context about your recovery. |
| RevenueCat | Manages subscriptions and in-app purchases | Your account identifier and subscription events. Not your payment details. |
| Loops | Sends our emails | Your email address, first name, subscription status, and a small number of properties used to send you relevant emails rather than generic ones. |
| PostHog | Product analytics | Events describing how the app is used, associated with your account identifier. |
| Sentry | Crash and error reporting | Technical details about crashes and errors, including device and app information. |
| Apple | Distributes the app and processes payments | Payment information (which we never see). When a refund is requested, we share information about your use of the app with Apple so it can evaluate the request — see section 6. |
We may also disclose information if we are legally required to, if we need to protect our rights or someone’s safety, or as part of a merger or acquisition (in which case we will tell you before your information becomes subject to a different policy).
K-Free offers a money-back guarantee, described in our Terms of Use. To support it, we have enabled Apple’s refund-handling process. When you request a refund through Apple, we share information about how you have used the app — for example, how long you have had it and how much of the subscription period has elapsed — so that Apple can evaluate the request, and so that we can register our approval on your behalf.
By using K-Free, you consent to that sharing. It exists to help you get your refund, not to prevent it.
If you enable notifications, we send reminders about your daily program and, if you choose, replies to your community posts. You can turn these off in the app or in your phone settings at any time.
We send emails about your account and subscription, and we may send emails about your recovery or about K-Free. Every marketing email includes an unsubscribe link, and unsubscribing does not affect essential emails about your account or billing.
Depending on where you live — including California, Virginia, Colorado, Connecticut, and Utah, or if you are in the EU or UK — you may have additional rights, such as the right to know what we hold, to correct it, to delete it, to obtain a portable copy, or to object to certain processing. We honor these requests regardless of where you live. Email support@kfree.app and we will respond within the time the law allows.
We do not sell personal information, and we do not share it for cross-context behavioral advertising, as those terms are defined under U.S. state privacy laws.
We keep your information while your account exists. If you delete your account, we delete the associated data, except where we must retain something to meet a legal obligation or to resolve a dispute. Backups may persist for a limited period before they cycle out. Aggregated or de-identified data that can no longer be linked to you may be retained.
We take reasonable measures to protect your information, including encryption in transit, access controls, and keeping the most sensitive thing you write — your journal — off our servers entirely. But no system is perfectly secure, and we will not tell you otherwise. If a breach affects your information, we will notify you as required by law.
K-Free is for adults. It is not directed at anyone under 18, and we do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 18. If we learn that we have, we will delete it. If you believe a minor has given us information, email us.
K-Free is operated from the United States, and your information is stored and processed there. If you use K-Free from outside the U.S., you understand that your information will be transferred to and processed in the United States, where privacy laws may differ from those in your country.
We may update this policy. We will post the new version here with an updated date, and we will tell you about material changes through the app or by email. Continuing to use K-Free after a change takes effect means you accept it.
Questions, requests, or concerns about your privacy? Email us at support@kfree.app. A person reads it.
